______________________________________________________ Welcome to the Rhino Team Math Homepage! Math 7 and Pre-Algebra Mr. Keith Knight ABOUT THE TEACHER: I was born into a military family in La Plata, Maryland. After several years of living in Maryland and California, my family uprooted to live in a small North Carolina town called Cary (population of 5000 at the time). Shortly after graduating Cary High School, I joined the USAF radar electronics division to work with NATO operations. Military highlights include a tour of duty in Germany, USAF Northern European volleyball team, and the USAF Commendation medal for outstanding service. After the USAF, I entered the NCSU engineering program where I received a B.S. in Nuclear Engineering with an emphasis in mechanical design. My work experience includes; Process/Manufacturing Engineer of optical fiber products with Corning (Wilmington, NC); R&D Manager of a multi-fiber optical connector facility with USConec (Hickory, NC) responsible for design of multi-fiber optical connectors, joint ventures, and consortium research papers; West Coast Commercial Building Telecomm Manager with Devnet (Carlsbad/L.A., CA.) responsible for development and management of telecomm infrastructure networks; and Senior Project/Operation Manager with PDActive (Atlanta, GA) responsible for the development of web based PDA mobile workforce software applications. I eventually returned to NCSU to pursue a teaching license in Middle School Mathematics/Science; where I continue to focus on a philosophy of “creating a technology enriched learning environment where students can develop an intrinsic desire to learn, understand, and effectively apply.” GOALS: Our goals this year are: - To understand and compute with rational numbers.
- To understand and use measurement involving two- and three-dimensional figures.
- To understand and use properties and relationships with geometric figures.
- To understand and use graphs and data analysis.
- To demonstrate an understanding of linear relations and fundamental algebraic concepts.
PROCEDURES: Please read the following information: - DDMS rules regarding tardies, absences, and make-up work apply in our class. I recommend these sections in your student handbook. Remember, you are expected to follow all rules set forth by WCPSS, DDMS, and the teacher. Class expectations and consequences are reviewed with the class. Appropriate action will be taken if you choose to break a rule. If you have any questions about the expectations, please feel free to ask me.
- All students are expected to keep a three-ring binder or spiral notebook and bring it to class daily – organization is the key. Students are expected to bring their assigned homework, pencils, paper, and agenda daily. Students will be unable to leave the class to retrieve these materials from lockers, friends, another classroom, etc. Written assignments are due by the assigned due date.
- It is important for you to be well organized. We will have three sections in our notebook (class notes, class work/homework, and quizzes/tests/projects.) We will have “open notebook quizzes/tests.” Success will require that your materials be kept in an organized manner. If you have trouble keeping organized, please see me immediately and I will gladly help you.
